Mural in our ECE area

Millars Well Primary School applied for a Healthways grant for funds that would assist the school to increase student’s knowledge and skills of the Indigenous culture of Karratha, Ngarluma.

On our journey of becoming Culturally Responsive, a mural was created in the Early Childhood learning area.  The mural helped facilitate the school to connect with the wider community by engaging two emerging artists to tell a Ngarluma Story centred around being together; this aligns to the school’s new vision of Together. You will find a copy of the story prominently displayed next to the mural in both Ngarluma and Standard Australian English.

The school liaised with Wangaba Roebourne Art Group. Ngarluma/Yindjibarndi artists, Sarah Rowlands and Tayla Williams, worked with the school to create a mural which was completed over two days in Term 2, 2023. Our students spent time with both of the artists listening and learning about their culture.

Not only will the artwork improve the environment of our school buildings, staff and students will be able to engage with the pieces of art in lessons looking at storytelling through art and Aboriginal perspectives. We look forward to continuing our work with Sarah and our school community.
