National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) offers many opportunities for parents and the community to get involved. It is important that students are taught good literacy skills but it is also important to emphasise the joy of reading. Parents can help to teach their children about reading and writing and that they are fun.

Children’s Book Council

This year’s theme for CBCA Children’s Book Week is Connect to Reading. In its 69th year Children’s Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia. Parents can This year parents could find out what activities and books are listed and join their children in celebrating reading between Saturday 16 August and Friday 22 August.

Trevor Cairney has created a blogthat aims to provide practical, timely and sound support and advice for parents, teachers and teachers in training. This is an excellent site for parents to read about books, literacy, reading and much more.

Involve the community

Paint the Town Red is an inspirational project designed to involve the whole town (or local community) in reading aloud. It originated in Parkes NSW but continues to spread to many states and territories.
